What would Scooby Doo?

03/26/2022

When I was a kid, every Saturday morning I was so excited to watch Scooby Doo where are you. He was funny, entertaining, and I always watched with anticipation of how he would find the bad guy and who the bad guy was. Undoubtedly, Scooby Doo was, and still is, the best cartoon ever, so I believe but not everyone else does. I've had some intense conversations with friends about Bugs Bunny, vs. Fred Flintstone, vs. Scooby Doo, vs....well you get the picture. Can you imagine if favorite cartoons created such a division between people that they stopped talking to each other? They couldn't meet in the middle or just agree to disagree? Then I wonder, if that were to happen, what would Scooby say.  Or better yet, what would Scooby Doo?

I think the first thing he would do, is eat a cookie. When Scooby didn't want to do something, one of the gang would ask him to do it for a Scooby Snack and he would negotiate his way into two or three Scooby snacks. I personally think this is a brilliant move as cookies always help me focus. Sometimes they help me focus on eating more cookies. Anyway, I digress.

Who is the greatest cartoon character ever? Some people say Bugs Bunny, some say Scooby Doo, some say the Flintstones, and the list goes on and on. One could even say there were no better cartoons than those of the 60's and 70's though I'm sure children of the 80's and 90's would disagree. Bottom line is, everyone has their own idea of who the best cartoon character ever is. Imagine now Scooby is the moderator of this discussion and a big disagreement breaks out over who is the best cartoon character ever. Marvin the Martian tells everyone there is no intelligent life in Hannah Barbera Cartoons. Fred Flintstone argues profusely while calling Kadzu to back him up that Hannah Barbera Martians are way cooler than Looney Toons. Underdog, who stands on his own with Rocky the racoon says they all seem like Mr. Magoo running into walls and unable to see the truth of the matter. He states he is the best, particularly because he is a superhero,  while the Justice League of America laughs and the wonder twins take the form of a gold medal. No one can agree and everyone is divided on their own opinions. Before you know it, the discussion becomes like an episode of the Laugh Olympics where ABC, CBS, and NBC cartoons are scheming against each other for first place in a race. Scooby, who is of the Hanna Barbera era steps in and says he can solve these divisions if anyone will offer him (another) Scooby Snack. Shaggy pulls one out of his pocket and gives it to Bugs Bunny to offer to Scooby as a peace offering.

Bugs then hands it to the Tasmanian Devil who swirls his way alongside the Road Runner asking Underdog to be their escort. They all work together to achieve the one goal of giving Scooby a snack to find out the true answer and end this division.

Scooby takes his snack, extends his paw in peace and then very calmly states "Can we all just agree that we disagree and that everyone has their own opinion of the best cartoon character ever which really means we are ALL the best cartoon characters ever. It just so happens that everyone has their opinion on who is their favorite and that's okay because we're all someone's favorite and it doesn't hurt anyone to just accept that fact." All the cartoon characters look at each other as if to say, "Is it really that simple?" Maybe it is.  Maybe it just takes a moment for people to stop pointing fingers, listen to another's point of view, breathe and look to find the answer as they work together for the greater good.

Anyway, that's what I think Scooby would do, and all for the love of a Scooby Snack. I wonder if there's such a thing as a big enough snack for all of us humans to stop, take a breath, listen and then try to work together for the common good. Maybe we could create a snack, call it respect and go from there. I'm willing to give it a go, how about you?
