How to do a push up
Now that I have your attention, today's journaling prompt is:
What is one way you will push yourself out of your comfort zone this year?
If you're afraid of escalators like I am, stepping onto one is anxiety provoking. I usually will take the stairs if it's an option, but if the escalator is the only option then I have to get on it. Generally if I am with someone I will have them go ahead of me and not wait. Then I have to stand there and watch the escalator as it moves, timing it so that I step on it at just the right time. Now mind you, I have never fallen off an escalator. I've never seen someone in person have an issue. I'm not sure if it's a depth perception or what it is, but I am terrified of stepping on to it. Sometimes I will even wait until there is no one around so no one has to watch me agonize over getting on an escalator.
Stepping out of your comfort zone into something that is unknown is like that. You analyze the situation, wait for the right time, think it all out and when you decide, or if you decide the time is right then you make that leap. Usually for me, that first step onto the escalator is like a leap. It's a BIG step for me. But if I don't get on the escalator then I don't get to my destination which sometimes can be a new pair of shoes (DSW is on the bottom floor of the mall and you have to take an escalator to get there).
Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is not an easy thing. This year I hope to be able to push myself to do more with my writing. I know I'm a good writer, but sometimes I don't know where to go with it or how to proceed and then my fear stops me from doing anything at all. This year I want to push myself to do something with my writing. I don't want to become rich and famous, I just want to share it with others, particularly people who don't know me. I think my words will make a difference. No, I know they will so this year I will push myself as I do to step on an escalator. I will push as if I had to push a ton weight out of the way. I guess if you look at it, fear is a huge weight, but I have the power to overcome it, to push myself, and to make things happen. Just like I make it happen to get on a an escalator to go buy a new pair of shoes. And you can never go wrong with a new pair of shoes.
