GOALS
Today's journaling prompt: What is the most important goal everyone should have?
Key phrase, most important everyone....
I guess I can't really speak to what everyone thinks is the most important goal, but to me, the most important goal everyone should have is to continue to always grow. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but try to tell my 13 year old Silky Terrier that. She's so smart and she's always learning and she still learned new commands. It's no different for us. An old dog not being able to learn new tricks, is really a person being stubborn and refusing to even try. Yes, we all get stuck in our ways but some ways are good to change about. Growing as a human being is the most important thing we can all do. We heal old wounds by growing by facing the fears that keep us chained in the basement. I always tell everyone I know that when you start therapy, it's going to be hard but to remember if you lived through the actual event, you'll live through remembering it and coming out on the other side of it. It's really hard, but it can be done and once you start to heal your heart, your soul will follow.
Take for instance Nola Ochs. Bet you have no idea who she is right? I didn't either until I googled world's oldest graduate. This woman graduated from college at 95 years old. She was then beat out by another woman who graduated college at 96 years and 200 days old. I bet they were scared, but they knew there was more out there. Have you ever seen water that stands still for long periods of time? What happens? It becomes stagnant, then smells REALLY bad. Then it's unsafe. I'm not saying you'll smell really bad if you stop growing, but we cheat ourselves by not believing there can be more at any age and there's tons of ways to grow, not just educationally or scholastically. You can learn a new skill, a new hobby, a new way of living. I saw a woman 60 years old become a professional body builder and she won the competition.
This is one of those topics that I could speak on for a long time, but it doesn't take much to make the point either. Most important goal a person can have in life? To not stop growing. There's too much in life to look away after a certain age. Keep moving forward and like the poem says "rest if you must, just don't you quit." That's the long and short of it, keep growing, keeping going, and just don't quit. You never know what you'll find if you keep moving. Here's to continual growth.
