Dishes or Laundry
My journaling prompt of today was:
What distractions get in the way of
being my most productive?
After stifling a little giggle, I put some thought into this question. The ADHD world is defined by distractions. You notice a cute dog being walked while you're driving. You are cleaning your house and come across a metal detecting find that you think would look good if you cleaned it. Anything that's interesting besides paperwork. Something that jogs your memory while you're doing something else. Coming up with more to do's while you're to doing what you should have in the first place, but now you have more you start to do. And the list goes on and on. In my world, distractions are the antithesis of productivity. A good example of this is that my original prompt was do the dishes or do the laundry, which would you prefer? Clearly I prefer to write about being distracted.
In either case of laundry or dishes, distraction is a key enemy to completing either of these tasks. I grew up having to do the dishes for a chore so I REALLY hate dishes. And they pile up so quickly. Too quickly. That's when you get to the point where you think "Time for the dishwasher". So you pile them in, run the washer, and then when they're done, let them sit in there instead of the cabinets where they should be after you hypothetically put them away. I find that with doing the dishes, I actually don't get distracted versus running out of time to do them or being too tired to do them. I suppose that is distraction. Either way, I hate doing the dishes.
Laundry on the other hand, I don't really mind doing it. Well the washing and drying that is. Folding and putting away....IF I remember to take it out of the washer or dryer, is a whole other story. I was recently talking with a friend of mine and told her I forgot about my laundry in the washer for a week. She looked at me with her mouth open and then just hollered, "How do you forget your laundry in the washer for a WEEK?". Well that's easy. I thought I put it in the dryer. It's not a good month if I don't have to rewash at least two loads of laundry in a month. At any rate, I digress. If the laundry makes it safely from the washer to the dryer, then making it upstairs is yet another step. Sometimes, I neatly fold it all downstairs and bring it upstairs where it sits....on a dresser...Sometimes though, I am just in a hurry or inpatient and put it all in a pile and bring it upstairs. Sometimes to the first floor where it goes on a rocker, sometimes to my bedroom where the top of the dresser is the real drawer and the drawers are just decorative. It usually takes company coming for me to put those clothes away.
So laundry or dishes. Neither really and I can't really blame distraction on the lack of completion of these tasks. Well I probably could if I thought up a good enough excuse but I don't have one right now. What I do have is lots of laundry to put away and some dishes to do...but wait, I have a cool blog post to write.
What, did someone say distraction?
