Deadman's Curve

12/07/2021

Once in a while I come across one of the poems I've written that I don't remember writing but think, "Gee, that's not half bad".  This one I liked enough to bring it here to share.  It was originally written on 10/15/13 at 9:18 p.m.

Deadman's Curve

Deadman's Curve is not just a song

It's the sharp turn you take in life when you don't know where you are going

It's the slippery slope that looms when life begins to change course and you don't feel quite ready

It's the endless stretch of road in the fog

When you can't see your hand in front of your face

But you are trying to navigate your way home anyway.

It's that hairpin turn, you know the one that makes you white knuckle the steering wheel and sweat bead on your brow.  That turn that even if you cross the line by a millimeter you will go tumbling off that cliff and crash into no man's land

The land that obliterates you and leaves you broken

Shattered and feeling so afraid and alone

Wondering if you can make it up that mountain to the peak

where you can proudly place your flag and stand triumphant.

The only thing standing in your path though, is Deadman's curve

The curve we all dread

The one though if we don't take it

We'll end up cheating ourselves out of what could have been, would have been

leaving us to sit in a rocking chair on the porch

Looking out over the road that emerged once safely around the bend

The road that could have led us home or to the top of that mountain to place our flag

If only we had enough courage to take that terrifying curve that came our way, maybe we would have seen that we wouldn't have spun out or over the side, but instead drove safely through to a dream destination not hampered by fear and one that couldn't be defeated by Deadman's curve.
